The Open Time Content Weather Targeter widget displays live weather information at the location of the recipient when they open the email, or at a destination of your choice. It can also show relevant images based on the current weather.
Introduction
You can create a Weather Targeter widget to match any style, brand or design of your choice. You can design a widget that shows:
- A simple weather bar showing the weather for that day.
- Different images based on what the weather is at the moment of opening.
- A single- or multi-day weather forecast (currently only available as full service; please contact Emarsys Support and we will prepare the widget for you).
All of these can display weather information relevant to where the email is opened, or for a specific location (e.g. a travel destination). The specific locations come from your database fields and must be added using personalization parameters in the tag (see below).
Creating a Weather Targeter widget
To create a Weather Targeter widget, proceed as follows:
- In the Open Time Content page, navigate to the campaign you wish to add the widget to and open it, or create a new campaign.
- Click Create new Mailing and Tag and click the Weather Targeter icon to open the wizard.
- Step 1: Give the mailing a name (we recommend to use the same name as the email campaign where you will add it) and click Next.
-
Step 2: Select the type of widget you would like to use. The options are:
- Weather Bar.
- Weather-based Images.
- Weather forecasts (full service only).
Displaying a simple weather bar
If you select Weather bar, you simply display the weather at the time and location of opening (you can also choose another location). This uses a standard set of icons (unlike the weather forecaster, which lets you upload your own icon set). If you would like to use your own icons, please provide these to Emarsys Support and we will add them to your account.
To display a simple weather bar, proceed as follows:
-
Step 3: Select the template to use for the weather bar. These are predefined templates supplied by Emarsys.
If you would like to use your own, please contact Emarsys Support.

In the next step, add a description and a click-through URL. You can also upload a fallback image to display if the location cannot be detected (we recommend that you use an invisible 1×1 gif so that this widget will effectively be removed from the email.).
After you browse for the image remember to click Start to initiate the upload.

- Click Next to generate the tag and then copy and paste it into your email as normal.
Displaying weather-based images
If you select Weather-based Images, you can set different images to display according to different weather patterns. For example, if a customer opens an email in the morning when it is raining, they may see coats and umbrellas. If the open it in the afternoon when it is sunny, they may see t-shirts and sunglasses.
- Upload your images. Then map each image to the weather condition under which it will be displayed. You can choose more than one condition for a specific image.
- After you defined the click-through URLs for the images, you must set an image as default. This will be displayed if no weather information is available.
- Click Next to generate the tag and then copy and paste it into your email as normal.
You can combine this widget with the Rule Builder to define further rules for the exact occasions of displaying these images. For example, you can define the temperature limits of the conditions and display different images accordingly.
Creating a weather forecast template
The weather forecast is only available as full service. If you want to use it, please contact Emarsys Support to activate it for you.
Before you can display a weather forecast, you need to design a template for it. On the Open Time Content page, open the Templates tab and click Weather Forecast. Here you can see your library of templates.
To create a new template, proceed as follows:
- Click New Template to open the template editor.
- Give the template a name and click the weather icons tab to enable upload of your icons.

Uploading the weather icons
To get started you will need weather icons for each weather condition. We recommend you have weather icons for the following conditions (one icon can be used for multiple conditions):
Blowing dust | Blowing sand | Blowing snow |
Clear | Cloudy | Drizzle |
Fair/mostly sunny | Fog | Freezing drizzle |
Freezing fog | Freezing rain | Freezing spray |
Frost | Hail | Haze |
Ice crystals | Ice fog | Ice pellets/sleet |
Mist | Mostly cloudy | Partly cloudy |
Rain | Rain showers | Rain/snow mix |
Smoke | Snow | Snow showers |
Snow/sleet mix | Thunderstorms | Unknown Precipitation |
Volcanic ash | Water spouts | Wintry mix |
We recommend each icon to have a maximum file size of 500KB. All icons should be the same size and dimensions.
To upload and map your icons, proceed as follows:
Click Customize Icons to launch the uploader. Select the icons you want and click Upload. This will open the mapping editor.

- Here you can see every icon you selected and a set of checkboxes for the weather conditions.
- Assign each weather icon the correct condition. Icons can be used for multiple weather conditions. For example, partly cloudy and mostly cloudy could be assigned to the same icon.
- Once you are happy with the mapping, click Save Mapping.
- You will now see the icons you have uploaded in the panel on the right. You can update the mapping or add new icons at any time by clicking Customize Icons.

Designing your weather forecast image
Now that you have your icons, you can design the image that will show when the widget is displayed. Proceed as follows:
- Open the Inspector tab and change the canvas to the required size using the controls.

- You can also upload a background image or assign a background color.
- When the canvas is as you want it, add a content block. Each content block will hold a separate data field from your content feed, for example location, time, temperature, etc.

- Size and format the text block, using the preview text as a guide.

- Click the link icon to connect the block to the content feed. Click Content Source and then unpack the feed to select the field you want to use.
- Click Done and repeat this for every field you want to use. Use the Layout tools in the Inspector to style and position the content inside the block and check it using the preview.

The icons you see in the preview are default icons and not the ones that you have uploaded.
- Use the left and right arrows to view the weather forecast for the coming days.

Multi-day forecasts
- To show many forecasts side by side, open the Properties of the editor and select Repeated.
- Select the number of days you would like to show and whether the time moves forward from left to right from top to bottom.
- Use the preview to check your content.
When saving the template, we recommend selecting the High resolution option to make sure it displays images that will look good on all devices.
Displaying a weather forecast
In Step 2 of the wizard, if you select Weather Forecasts, you must first select the template that you created above.
- In the next step, add a description and a click-through URL. You can also upload a fallback image to display if the location cannot be detected (we recommend that you use an invisible 1×1 gif).
- Click Next. You can now choose whether you wish to show the weather at the opening location, at a specific city or at an airport (e.g. to show weather in a travel destination).
- Click Next to generate the tag and then copy and paste it into your email as normal. If you want to use a specific location, update the tag according to the instructions below.
Displaying the weather in specific locations
The standard tag generated by the Weather Targeter looks something like this:
<a href="https://img2.kickdyn.com/clickweather.ashx?c=45.4GrtShCrIKnEBwvUfBeL"><img src="http://img2.kickdyn.com/45/4GrtShCrIKnEBwvUfBeL/imgweather.png" border="0" /></a>
- If you have chosen the City option for your widget, instead of the location of open option, the tag will contain two parameters that you will have to map to the personalization variables for the database fields which hold the relevant information:
<a href="https://img.kickdyn.com/clickimgdfweather.ashx?c=631.eqCwgLJsWVgf4AVhEPJe"><img src="http://img.kickdyn.com/imgdfweather.png?c=631.eqCwgLJsWVgf4AVhEPJe&cc=$Country$&cn=$City$&cu=en-GB" border="0" /></a>
After you add this tag to your email code, the result will look something like this:
https://img.kickdyn.com/imgdfweather.png?c=631.eqCwgLJsWVgf4AVhEPJe&cc=GB&cn=LONDON&cu=en-GB
