You can combine multiple segments and data attributes to target your contacts more accurately. By combining segments, you can create multi-layered, complex segments which are much more efficient than using many segments side by side.
All the combined segments you have already created are displayed on the Combined Segments overview page. On this page, you can also create new combined segments including contact lists and segments.
Creating a combined segment
By combining segments, you can:
- build complex combined segments in a flexible way,
- combine segments and contact lists by using both the Match all (AND) and Match any (OR) operators within a single group,
- create nested subgroups within groups,
- view and negate selected segments and contact lists.
You can create a combined segment as follows:
1. Choose one from the following options to create a combined segment:
2. Enter your segment's name and add a description.

Important:
- A combined segment can contain a maximum of 2 groups.
- You can add a maximum of 25 subgroups to each group or subgroup.
- Subgroups can be nested up to 2 levels.
4. When you are ready, click Save.
Empty groups and subgroups will be deleted.
5. To check the size of your target audience, click Calculate.
You can display all the contacts within your combined segment by clicking View contacts.

Specifying your target audience
Here you can:
Linking subgroups, segments and contacts lists by using operators
You can link subgroups, segments and contact lists and define their relationship within a group or subgroup by using the Match all (AND) or Match any (OR) operator.

Naming groups and subgroups
The selected segment's type is displayed next to its name.
Adding criteria to your combined segment
You can add segments or contact lists to the group or subgroup by clicking Add Criteria.
Be careful with the selected operator when negating segments. The following examples show you how the operators can change the segment results when using negated segments.
Suppose that your contacts live in New York, Berlin and Budapest:
- If your group contains the segments Continent is Europe OR NOT City is Budapest, then your combined segment will include contacts living in Berlin and New York.
- If your group contains the segments Continent is Europe AND NOT City is Budapest, then your combined segment will only include contacts living in Berlin.
You can see the second example in the following image:

Adding subgroups to your combined segment
You can add subgroups within a group or subgroup by clicking Add Subgroup.
Notes:
- Subgroups can be nested up to 2 levels.
- You can create complex groups by using different operators (Match all (AND) or Match any (OR)) on different levels.
Adding an exclusion to your combined segment
You can add another group to your combined segment by clicking Add Exclusion Groups can be linked by using the AND, AND NOT or OR operators.

Collapsing or expanding groups
You can collapse or expand all groups and subgroups as follows:
- To collapse all groups and subgroups, click Hide All Details in the top right corner. As a result, all groups and subgroups will be hidden and the number of criteria within all groups will be displayed.
- To expand all groups and subgroups, click Show All Details.

You can collapse or expand a group or subgroup as follows:
- To collapse a group or subgroup, click Hide details in the group’s header. As a result, all criteria within the group including subgroups will be hidden and the number of segments contained within the group or subgroup will be displayed.
- To expand a group or subgroup, click Show details in the group’s header. If you expand a group or subgroup containing collapsed subgroups, then those subgroups will still be folded, so you need to expand them one by one.

Example
In the following example, you can see a combined segment targeting contacts who:
- Are millennials
AND
- Opened the veganuary campaign OR have affinity for the eco-friendly product line OR purchased a product that belongs to the sustainable category
AND
- Did NOT open the app within the last week OR are NOT club members OR did NOT purchase an item in the last 10 days.
This combined segment looks like as follows:
Instead of using the negate option for each segment in subgroup AB, you can add another group to your combined segment and set the operator to AND NOT. This is how this approach looks like:
This approach reflects the logic used by the legacy editor: group A is an Included segment and group B is an Excluded segment.
What happens to existing combined segments built in the legacy editor?
What happens to combined segments that were built in the legacy editor?
- Combined segments built in the legacy editor will keep the selected segments and contact lists after the switchover.
- Combined segments built in the legacy editor that you use for block targeting or as a recipient source will work as expected after the switchover.
- If you build a combined segment the same way as you did in the legacy editor, then you will get the same results.
In the following sections, you can see what happens to combined segments after the switchover.
Combined segments containing Included segments only
If there are Included segments only in your combined segment, then they will be nested within the same group and the group operator will be kept after the switchover.
In the following example, the combined segment contains the following Included segments:
- Contacts with opt-in
OR
- Consent given
After the switchover, this is how this segment looks like:
- The Included segments are nested within group A,
- The group operator is set to Match any (OR).
Combined segments containing Excluded segments only (Included segments contain All contacts)
If there are Excluded segments only in your combined segment (and the Included segments contain All contacts), then after the switchover:
- The Excluded segments will be nested within the same group and negated (NOT),
- The group operator will change from OR to AND or from AND to OR respectively.
In the following example, the combined segment contains the following Excluded segments:
- Contacts without opt-in
OR
- Contacts without email
After the switchover, this is how this segment looks like:
- The Excluded segments are nested within group A and negated (NOT),
- The group operator changes to Match all (AND).
Combined segments containing Included and Excluded segments
If there are Included and Excluded segments in your combined segment, then after the switchover:
- The Included segments will be nested within the same group and the selected group operator will be kept.
- The Excluded segments will be nested within another group and the selected group operator will change from OR to AND or from AND to OR respectively.
- The groups will be linked by the AND NOT operator.
In the following example, the combined segment contains the following segments:
- Included segments:
- Contacts living in Germany
OR
- Contacts living in Hungary
- Excluded segments:
- Contacts without opt-in
AND
- Contacts without email
After the switchover, this is how this segment looks like:
- The Included segments are nested within group A and the group operator is set to Match any (OR),
- The Excluded segments are nested within group B and the group operator changes to Match any (OR),
- The two groups are linked by the AND NOT operator.
Combined segments containing Excluded segments including all contacts
Combined segments where the Excluded segments contain either All contacts or All contacts and other segments linked by the AND operator are not migrated after the switchover.
For example, the following combined segments will not be migrated after the switchover because the Excluded segments contain All contacts.
